The Folk of the Air saga by Holly Black is one of the most popular young adult novels in the market at the moment. This series was a recommendation from GoodReads, and reading the reviews of other readers saying how wonderful this book was, I couldn't wait to start reading it and to fall in love with it like so many others had. With the highest of expectations I commenced my journey with this praised book. Unfortunately, my opinion will probably not be too popular.
Many will not agree with this review and I understand for there is nothing that hurts more than to hear anyone say how they disliked a story that has a strong place in your heart. So, before I begin, please forgive me and hear me out.
REVIEW: ★★★
This was a story I really wanted to love. But I think my hopes where set too high. I purchased both books that are currently out. To begin with, the main reason I didn't enjoy it as much was the characters. Yes, I'm sorry, but I didn't see any chemistry between the two characters in any part of the book only perhaps close to the ending and even then I just couldn't picture it. Maybe it's because I had only read book one but at start I didn't like the main characters at all. Cardan is not even attractive in his way of being (not physically, there I know he is stunning) and Jude is just sick with thirst for power, yeah I get why but still. It was hard for me to connect with her, for I found her lacking in so many ways. I understand she wanted power and revenge but I find her bit immature, at least in book one.
I personally didn't like the "school" setting either, I guess I was expecting more of a "court" sort of book rather than a classroom, even though we get both, I found the school scenes childish and would have developed the story elsewhere. On a positive side though, I loved the world this author has created and the creativity behind it, that is why I respect it and understand part of the fascination.
Even though at times I thought the story dragged a bit and was finding it hard to continue, I still decided to finish it and go along to read book two. The Wicked King review will be written in another post, but as I finished book two, I got why everyone loves this story for in it I found what all the fuss was about, and heck yeah was everyone right.
I would still recommend this series to any young adult lovers out there and I would tell them that if you have doubts based on book one, please don't stop reading it, book two is everything you could have asked for and more! And now, I can't wait for November when the final installment of this magical saga come to an end.
You can get this book at any book store or online stores like KOBO, KINDLE and IBOOKS.
Happy Reading!
